From Fish and Chip Shop to Parliament: Pauline Hanson at the Swan Chamber of Commerce

Journalist Anjelica Smilovitis of Press Road Media and One Nation’s Senator Pauline Hanson.

Senator Pauline Hanson was invited to share her story yesterday at the Swan Chamber of Commerce (Official) “Hour of Power,” speaking simply as Pauline, not as Senator Hanson.

The ongoing event focuses on leadership and brings together speakers from all walks of life to share their journeys, with an emphasis on empowering others to have a go, persevere and step into leadership in their own way.

I’ve attended a number of these events, and they always leave me feeling more human—encouraged to roll up my sleeves and keep showing up for whatever I’m building.

Pauline fit that spirit well, sharing her journey from fish and chip shop owner about 30 years ago to where she is today at 72 years old.

After hearing her speak about consistently backing herself and the importance of surrounding ourselves with a strong support system, I asked how she stays resilient in the face of adversity and the “noise” of media and politics.

She said she has been able to do so by being true to herself and true to others.

“I’m true to myself; I know who I am,” she said firmly. “It’s being up front and honest with people. But before you can do that, you have to be honest with yourself.”

She went on to speak about the responsibility that comes with the position she has, and how she doesn’t take that responsibility lightly—particularly in how she believes it should be used to drive meaningful change.

Beyond this, Pauline shared some very personal aspects of her life, which serve as a reminder that everyone is still human—even a public figure and leader.

A big shout out to the Swan Chamber for creating such a welcoming atmosphere, giving attendees the space to hear from Pauline and focus on leadership beyond politics.
